New year; new writing project. In 2024 my intention is to keep a weekly haiku journal. Each month I will select some of these haiku to feature on my website. Please stay with me on my journey!
January
street storm blows all night:
furiously recycling
my recycling
origami:
I make folds
in the wrong places
February
on this perfect day
there is nothing else to do
but be here, be here
auspicious morning:
two magpies in the bay tree
laughing at the fox
March
swan’s slow entrance:
a fraction more light
than there was the day before
spring opens
on a winter street:
the pink magnolias
April
moss-covered buddha
by the brimming bird-bowl:
unpicked violets
lunch with an old friend:
she gently picks a grey hair
from my new spring coat
May
after the rain:
blackbird’s yellow piercing
above the river
a cathedral sky:
evensong
June
caught between
winter and winter:
solstice
playing Mozart
to my seedlings:
hothousing
July
stained glass windows
turn to gold:
old tunes in new hands
August
birds sing above the traffic:
things are not so bad
in summer we forget
how autumn contains winter
September
September’s gentler light:
all things
seem possible again
October
The year gives up
its final sweetness:
autumn’s last parade
November
surprised by evening:
too soon this darkening sky
